EFC is an applied research center that works with communities across the Mid-Atlantic to help advance effective and pragmatic policies, programs, and financing for environmental initiatives. We assist local, state, and federal partners as they seek to improve efficiency and impact, providing actionable recommendations anchored in sound data.

EFC is home to the hallmark Sustainable Maryland (SM) program, a free and voluntary initiative that supports Maryland communities in their sustainability efforts.

Our research labs forward cutting-edge approaches to shed light on critical issues and discoveries within Maryland communities and beyond.

The Stormwater Infrastructure Resilience and Justice (SIRJ) Lab focuses on infrastructural justice for stormwater management and resilience.

Research Projects

The Historic Preservation Program’s Archaeology and Preservation Laboratory is committed to producing high quality research on the material culture of the past, from standing structures to buried artifacts. The interpretation of the past requires careful consideration and analysis to open up new understandings and develop new lines of inquiry.

Located on the lower level of the Architecture Building near the auditorium, the Kibel Gallery offers dynamic, engaging exhibits on design, architecture and the built environment during the fall and spring semesters. It is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is free.
