The Historic Preservation Program’s Archaeology and Preservation Laboratory is committed to producing high quality research on the material culture of the past, from standing structures to buried artifacts. The interpretation of the past requires careful consideration and analysis to open up new understandings and develop new lines of inquiry. HISP faculty, students and community volunteers all contribute to the success of the lab and the interpretation of the findings.
The documentation of heritage sites is a specialization of the lab, combining traditional techniques of mapping and measured line drawings with methods for the digital documentation and mapping of heritage sites, including terrestrial laser scanning, photogrammetry, GPS, and total stations.
Lab activities provide an additional depth of understanding about the past through the analysis and interpretation of the artifacts and archaeological features. The methods regularly employed in the lab include artifact processing and cataloging, ultra-violet fluorescence, artifact photography, 3-D photogrammetry, computational analysis and digital archaeology.
