Restoring a Main Street’s “Charm”
Architecture student Christophe Tanis discovered a bold way to gauge a neighborhood’s walkability while strolling down a city street in West Baltimore: He estimated the number of inches between him and a speeding bus. “There’s no safety buffer between the sidewalk and the road, and people are driving so fast,” he said. “It's not a good place for people to walk, period.”
Brendan DeCoster
Biography:Brendan serves as the main advisor for architecture graduate students and as the coordinator of graduate studies for the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation.
Tanya Bansal
Biography: Tanya Bansal joined the Real Estate Development Programs at the University of Maryland in November 2014, and currently serves as the Director and Clinical Associate Professor. Bansal teaches Introduction to Real Estate Development Principles and Process course to graduate and undergraduate students.
Ashley Skipper
Biography:Ashley serves as Program Coordinator within the Real Estate Development Program in School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Previously, she worked as a Placement Coordinator where she placed students in internships. Ashley has been working in higher education for four years. She loves to travel and in her free time she enjoys attending concerts.
Brentwood Climate Action Plan Implementation
EFC, in partnership with the Town of Brentwood, MD, and Nature Forward, is working to implement equitable climate resilience strategies in the Brentwood community, with a focus on engaging Latinx residents and businesses.
Mid-Atlantic Sustainable Breweries
UMD EFC’s Mid-Atlantic Sustainable Breweries Program offers free sustainability consultations to help craft brewers assess operations and implement practices related to energy, water, wastewater, air emissions, and cleaning and sanitizing – all while saving costs and improving brand recognition. This work is funded by a US EPA Pollution Prevention grant. We offer:

Biography:Medessa has more than 20 years of experience in the environmental, public health, and education-related fields. She joined the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland in 2011 and currently serves as Assistant Director.

Biography:Delaney West is the Senior Program Coordinator for the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, supporting the Historic Preservation (HISP), Urban Studies & Planning (URSP) and Urban and Regional Planning and Design (URPD) programs.
Designing a Resilience Action Plan for Maryland’s Coastal Communities
As Maryland’s coastal communities face increasing climate threats, including rising sea levels and severe storms, this initiative aims to strengthen the resilience of eight vulnerable coastal jurisdictions. The project focuses on addressing climate-related hazards through nature-based solutions (NBS) and enhancing fish and wildlife habitats.
