Programs by Discipline

Explore our academic communities:

Architecture

The University of Maryland’s Architecture Program provides a nationally-recognized design education that prepares students to tackle big, 21st century challenges within the built environment. The program’s values—collaboration, critical inquiry, creative problem-solving, innovation and socially and environmentally-minded practice— foster an enriching academic experience and drive its culture of community. Students work side-by-side with peers, practicing architecture faculty, architectural scholars and industry mentors to learn the fundamental aspects of the design process, historic context, urbanism and sustainable building methods and technologies. While situated in the culturally and architecturally-rich Washington D.C. region, the world is our classroom—our students engage in global project collaborations, education abroad experiences, and international competitions. Housed with programs in urban planning, real estate development and historic preservation, our students collaborate across disciplines within our school, university and community to craft vibrant, meaningful places for all.

Urban Planning

The Master of Community Planning (MCP) is a professional degree accredited by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning and the American Planning Association. The MCP offers a broad curriculum to prepare students for careers in community housing, transportation planning, economic development and environmental planning.

The PhD in Urban and Regional Planning and Design is a highly competitive program that prepares students for careers in university teaching, research and practice.

Historic Preservation

The two-year Master of Historic Preservation (MHP) meshes individual and collaborative coursework with practical experience to explore the pressing issues of the historic preservation profession including conservation, preservation planning and design, economic development, public policy and cultural diversity. The MHP prepares students for a number of rewarding careers in the social, physical and economic constructs of the built environment.

Real Estate Development

The Master of Real Estate Development degree embraces a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary approach to real estate education addressing all facets of the industry, including planning, property management, finance and construction. The foundation of our program centers on the Quadruple Bottom Line, underscoring the importance of economic viability, environmental respect, social responsibility and beautiful design.
