    Giving Shelter: Terp Magazine Remembers Professor John Wiebenson

    Fifty years ago, one of the first projects undertaken by UMD’s then-new school of architecture was to make the final major vision of Martin Luther King Jr. a reality. John Wiebenson, the late architect, professor and co-founder of what is now the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, helped designed the plans for “Resurrection City,” a campsite on the National Mall where the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s “Poor People’s Campaign” lived and lobbied for jobs, better wages and a voice in government.

    Dr. Marccus Hendricks Joins Urban Studies and Planning Program

    Dr. Marccus Hendricks will join the University of Maryland’s Urban Studies and Planning Program this fall as an incoming Assistant Professor. With a research and practice agenda rooted in environmental justice, Hendricks’ interests focus on how infrastructure, environmental outcomes and neighborhood forces interact to affect people’s everyday lives and their lives during times of extreme events. He specializes in infrastructure planning and management, environmental planning and hazard and disaster mitigation.

    Planning Life After Retirement: Dr. Jim Cohen

    Dr. Jim Cohen, Senior Lecturer and former Director of the Urban Studies and Community Planning Program, retires this summer after 27 years at the University of Maryland. Jim was integral in shaping the program, leveraging his passion for environmental planning to bring new coursework and opportunities to the school, including community projects in Baltimore and Prince George’s County. He engineered the university’s National Center for Smart Growth, which was developed to leverage the expertise of multiple university programs. Dr.

    Maria Day-Marshall Appointed Director of UMD’s Real Estate Development Program

    The University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation welcomes Dr. Maria Day-Marshall, a 30-year veteran of housing policy, government and finance, as the new director of the school’s Real Estate Development Program [MRED]. Day-Marshall was most recently the interim executive director and general counsel for D.C.’s Housing Finance Agency.

    Putting the “Quadruple Bottom Line” to Work: Marcus Ervin (MRED '09)

    The first course Marcus Ervin took in real estate development, he nearly failed. An undergraduate architecture student at Morgan State University, Marcus took the course in hopes of parlaying the knowledge into a side job in the industry to earn some additional income. It was more than he expected. “The course was constructed like ‘The Apprentice’ and we were tasked with redeveloping a blighted neighborhood in east Baltimore,” Marcus, recalls laughing, “I knew nothing about project financing and had limited experience with Excel.
