TERPS make “the final four” at the 2015 ULI-Gerald Hines Student Urban Design Competition

A team of graduate students from UMD’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation has landed one of four finalist slots in the thirteenth annual Urban Land Institute/Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition, beating out over 120 teams from 60 of the finest and most prestigious graduate-level programs in the United States and Canada. UMD will join two teams from Harvard University and one joint team from the University of Wisconsin in the finals arena on April 9, 2014 in New Orleans. Team Maryland is: Sebastian Dern (MRED), Ashley Grzywa (MARCH), Daniel Moreno-Holt (MARCH/MRED), Patrick Reed (MCP) and Sophia Weller (MARCH). The team’s advisors are Professor Matthew Bell and Professor Margaret McFarland.

The ULI/Hines competition challenges interdisciplinary teams of graduate students to create a dynamic design and development solution for a real large-scale site in just two weeks. While this is an ideas competition, it is part of the Urban Land Institute’s continued mission to engage young professionals in collaborative solutions, responsible land use and creating better communities. This year’s competition asked teams to devise a comprehensive design and development program for parts of the Tulane/Gravier and Iberville neighborhoods in downtown New Orleans. The winning team will walk away with $50,000, with $5,000 going towards the school.
