Lung-Amam Named Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution

Home About News and Events News Lung-Amam Named Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution
Willow Lung-Amam

Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning Willow Lung-Amam has been named a Nonresident Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization located in Washington, D.C. Lung-Amam joins more than 300 experts in government and academia to address a spectrum of policy issues through research, recommendations and analysis.

“Willow’s scholarship on the complex policy issues surrounding inequity in the built environment will be a huge asset to the work at Brookings,” said Interim Dean Donald Linebaugh. “This is an incredible and well-deserved achievement.”

Lung-Amam’s research examines how urban and suburban planning and policy can impact social inequity, particularly in neighborhoods undergoing rapid racial and economic change. In addition to her appointment at Brookings, Lung-Amam is a nonresident fellow at the Urban Institute’s Metropolitan Housing and Communities Policy Center. She was a 2019-20 residential fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Urban Sustainability Laboratory.

Lung-Amam’s expertise in planning and policy issues, including suburban poverty, gentrification, immigration, neighborhood opportunity and racial segregation, has made her a sought-after source for national media outlets such as the New York Times, NPR and CityLab. She is currently working on her second book, tentatively titled, The Right to Suburbia: Redevelopment and Resistance on the Urban Edge.

“Dr. Lung-Aman’s work adds significantly to our research and outreach on community policies that add to social inequity,” said University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines. “Working with Brookings will amplify her impact. It’s where thought leaders can make a difference.”

The Governance Studies program at Brookings is dedicated to analyzing policy issues, political institutions and processes and contemporary governance challenges. Scholarship conducted within the program identifies areas in need of reform and proposes specific solutions with the goals of: improving the performance of the national government; informing debate; and providing policymakers with expert analysis and ideas to ensure better institutional governance.
