Global Studio Collaborations

Global Studio Collaborations are joint workshops between UMD Architecture students and peers from international universities worldwide. Following in the footsteps of Madlen Simon’s Bridging the Gap graduate design studio, these workshops inspire cultural curiosity and design exchange, fostering a global mindset to create equitable spaces.

Through a virtual format, students collaborate across continents on projects and design exercises, while engaging in meaningful discussions. This global perspective helps students understand the role of culture, economies, climate and other factors in the design process and consider more broadly their project's relationship to a larger context.

Global charrettes are a critical initiative in the architecture program’s plan to foster new relationships with international partner institutions through direct student and faculty engagement that meet the following goals:

  1. To inspire student curiosity about diverse ways of thinking in international institutions.
  2. To exchange ideas through collaborative learning models such as charrettes.
  3. Aid students in developing a global mindset in their design process and future careers.
  4. To diversify and internationalize the architecture program curriculum.
  5. To create partnerships with peer institutions in order to foster future collaborations.
