Sevgi Erdogan

Associate Research Professor, National Center for Smart Growth

Dr. Sevgi Erdoğan is an Associate Research Professor at the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education (NCSG) and an affiliate of the Maryland Transportation Institute (MTI) at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research focuses on the complex interrelations among human infrastructure, socio-economic activity, and the environment, with contributions in transportation systems analysis, sustainable transportation and logistics, and integrated transportation, land use, and environmental modeling.

Dr. Erdoğan specializes in network modeling and optimization; travel demand management with emphasis on pricing and energy-efficient transportation alternatives; travel behavior dynamics; alternative fuel vehicles and fleet operations; emissions mitigation; sustainable and resilient transportation systems; and emerging transportation technologies and smart cities, including mobility as a service, on-demand transportation, and autonomous and connected vehicles. Her most influential work introduced the green vehicle routing problem, which helped advance research in alternative fuel vehicle fleet operations and infrastructure design.

At NCSG, Dr. Erdoğan leads megaregional and statewide transportation model development and applications related to sustainability, smart growth policy, and mobility analysis. Her recent work focuses on incorporating autonomous and connected vehicles and shared mobility into existing modeling frameworks. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Federal Highway Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation, and Maryland state agencies.

Dr. Erdoğan has authored approximately 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, 15 technical reports, and delivered more than 35 invited talks. She serves on editorial advisory boards and Transportation Research Board committees and holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland, along with advanced degrees from the University of Delaware and Istanbul Technical University.
