Marty Koelsch

Shop Technician

martyk@umd.edu (301) 405-6324

Room 0110, Architecture Building

Marty Koelsch is the Shop Technician in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation where she maintains the Woodshop and the Digital Fabrication Lab, administers shop safety, maintains equipment, and provides instruction in the craft of model making. She works to provide shop access to students so they can work on their making skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Marty grew up in Ohio along the shores of Lake Erie. As a child she spent a lot of time down by the water playing in the dirt, chasing geese, and trying to catch dragonflies. In 2014, she attended The Ohio State University to study landscape architecture where she developed an interest in woodworking, fabrication, and CNC machining. Shortly after, she did a short stint in New Orleans, Louisiana as a landscape designer before moving to the east coast. She has her MFA in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art where she developed work concerning the livelihood of Baltimore’s underground waterways. She is a practicing artist and makes work that discusses the relationship between humans and the environment through ecological, historical, and queer lenses.

Prior to joining MAPP in 2024, Marty worked as the Studio Technician at the Maryland Institute College of Art where she spent most of her time maintaining, running, and teaching students the CNC router. When she’s not tinkering around the shop, you’ll most likely find her down by the river with her binoculars looking for critters.
