Kevin Nelson

knelso13@umd.eduKevin Nelson is a Lecturer in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. With over 25 years of experience, Mr. Nelson has worked with local governments and regional councils to develop urban solutions for sustainable living and prosperity. His background includes roles in urban design nonprofits, consulting firms, and the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Smart Growth Office. At present, he is the Urban Governance Lead at the Bureau of Development, Democracy, and Innovation within USAID. He oversees the Urban Expert Working Group and leads efforts supporting the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals. Mr. Nelson is key in USAID’s strategy on urban economic impact, governance, climate change, and municipal service delivery.
Additionally, Mr. Nelson engages in donor relations and global initiatives, contributing to the G20’s sustainable localization, the IPCC climate report, and projects like the Summit for Democracy, enhancing safety and empowerment in urban areas. He has contributed to zoning codes, comprehensive plans, and smart growth tools, producing numerous reports and guides on urban resilience, resource mobilization, and climate finance.
Mr. Nelson holds a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Illinois (1995) and a bachelor’s degree in Government and International Relations from the University of Notre Dame (1993). He has taught at The Catholic University of America and the University of Maryland Baltimore County, focusing on urban sustainability and public administration.
