Associate Director of Communications & Research, Small Business Anti-Displacement Network

Katy June-Friesen is Associate Director of Communications & Research for the Small Business Anti-Displacement Network, housed at the National Center for Smart Growth. She is a PhD candidate in UMD’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, where her research focuses on news coverage and public discourse surrounding redevelopment and gentrification. In addition to her academic research, Katy has more than 20 years of experience as a writer, editor, and producer for nonprofits, higher ed institutions, and news outlets. She has produced print and video stories, edited publications, managed research projects, and written for documentary and public history projects. Her journalism has been published in national magazines and newspapers. She has an M.A. in journalism from the University of Missouri, an M.A. in literary and cultural studies from Carnegie Mellon University, and a B.A. in English from Bethel College, Kansas.
