
John Sprinkle, Jr.
Adjunct Professor, Historic Preservation
jsprinkl@umd.eduAfter working as a private sector historic preservation consultant for a decade, John Sprinkle served as a historian for the National Park Service from 1989 to 2022. He holds a doctorate in American history and a master’s degree in historical archaeology from the College of William and Mary. Dr. Sprinkle is the author of: Crafting the Preservation Criteria: The Origins of the National Register of Historic Places (2014), and Saving Space: Historic Land Conservation in the United States (2018). His next book, Heritage Conservation in the United States: Enhancing the Presence of the Past, will appear in 2023. He has taught a variety of courses for the HISP program since 2012.
