Guido Francescato

Professor Emeritus, Architecture Program

Professor Francescato focuses on architectural and urban theory, criticism, environmental design research, environmental psychology, and design methods. His research on residential satisfaction in publicly assisted housing led to widely used conceptual models and protocols, earning a 1983 Award for Exemplary Research from the National Endowment for the Arts and a 1980 Progressive Architecture Research Award. He has designed buildings and urban interventions in North America, Argentina, Italy, and Ethiopia, with recent projects including the Mathews-Potter House in New Mexico and the Tibbits House in Maryland. As a consultant, he has worked with organizations like the World Bank and the U.S. Department of HUD. His publications include "Residents' Satisfaction in HUD-Assisted Housing: Design and Management Factors" and "Residential Environments: Choice, Satisfaction and Behavior," along with chapters in books and journal articles. He has presented at numerous conferences, delivering keynotes on topics like "Metropolis 21st Century" in Paris and "Smart Growth and Environmental Psychology" in Toledo. A Fellow of the Society for Human Ecology, he has reviewed for the journal Environment and Behavior and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. At the University of Illinois, he taught in the Graduate Urban Design Studio and seminars on Theory, Criticism, and Design Methods. At the University of Maryland, he chaired the Department of Housing and Design and taught Design Studio and graduate seminars on Architecture and Typology until his retirement in 2007. In 1997, he taught a course on Residential Satisfaction at La Sapienza University in Rome.
