apressma@umd.edu (301) 405-6285Andrew Pressman, FAIA, NCARB, teaches the required graduate-level Professional Practice course. He is the author of Professional Practice 101: A Compendium of Effective Business Strategies in Architecture, now in its third edition. Pressman previously served as Professor and Director of the architecture program at the University of New Mexico, where he is now Professor Emeritus.
He leads his own award-winning architectural firm in Washington, DC. His work has been featured in more than 30 professional, scholarly, and popular publications, including Architectural Record, Architecture, and Washingtonian magazine. He is currently working on the Star Court Pavilion, under construction in Cobb Park in downtown Washington, DC.
Pressman has written numerous critically acclaimed books including Design Thinking: A Guide to Creative Problem Solving for Everyone, and a trilogy of “designing” texts: Designing Architecture: The Elements of Process (2012), Designing Relationships: The Art of Collaboration in Architecture (2014), and (with Morris Nunes) Designing Profits: Creative Business Strategies for Design Practices (2016). His latest book is IDEAS—A Secret Weapon for Business: Think and Collaborate Like a Designer (2025). Pressman holds a Master's degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
