School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation Maryland Day activities:

"Growing" Green Giveaway

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM - McKeldin Mall

Take home a free seed packet of black-eyed Susans, the state's official wildflower. Learn about the Sustainable Maryland program and how you can start a Green Team in your own community.

"Mobilizing" the Vote

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM - McKeldin Mall

Motor-voter? Pedals to the Polls? What would YOU name a mobile information hub for getting out the vote? See a prototype of UMD's new bipartisan, bicycle-powered beacons for civic engagement, and cast your vote (or write in your own candidate!) to name it.

Architecture Model Museum

10:00 AM - 4:00 PM - Architecture Building

Explore intricately assembled skyscrapers, plazas, museums and more—all in miniature. See how students bring buildings to life with balsa wood, X-Acto knives, glue and a dose of creativity.

City Planning 101: Box City

12:00 PM - 4:00 PM - Architecture Building

Use cereal boxes, old-fashioned oat cylinders and egg cartons to build a modern—and model—sustainable city. How will people travel? Work with real planners to create light-rail lines, bus routes and bike lanes that connect people and places.

City Storm Simulation and Water Emergency Team

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM - McKeldin Mall

Simulate a flood in a miniature city to see how green infrastructure can reduce flooding, and learn how UMD is using sensor technology and lab analysis to test water quality across the state.

"Dig" Into History

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM - McKeldin Mall

Get your hands dirty at a mock excavation site and uncover clues to its mysterious past. Tools and expertise provided.
