Information on the character of the domestic architecture of slavery in Virginia is available in a variety of forms: standing structures, archaeological sites, and documentary sources. The linked spreadsheets contain significant resources that are available to conduct comparative research.
- Archaeology. The information has been gleaned from a variety of sources, primarily consisting of excavation reports and site survey forms on file with the Virginia department of Historic Resources; compiled 2007-08, 124 sites.
- Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia. The entries were extracted from insurance policies prepared by the MAS, dating between 1796 and 1867. The database is organized according to two types of structures: 154 listed as residences; 136 listed as residences combined with another function.
- Previously recorded standing structures. The data was extracted from architectural property files held at the Virginia Department of Historic Resources; as of 2008, 389 properties.
- Virginia Slave Quarter Catalogue. Compilation of identified slave and servants’ quarters, kitchen quarters, and kitchens, contained in the Virginia Cultural Resource Information System (VCRIS) of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
