The University of Maryland Environmental Finance Center (EFC) advances finance solutions to environmental challenges. With more than 30 years serving the Mid-Atlantic region, we work to strengthen the capacity of local leaders to deliver effective programming, access funding and financing, and catalyze action.

Our research centers and institutes forward groundbreaking research within the built environment that advances dynamic, sustainable and just places.

The School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (MAPP) offers flexible, interdisciplinary undergraduate degrees that prepare students to shape the built environment, with an emphasis on creative problem-solving, technical proficiency and critical thinking. Whether pursuing architecture, real estate, or one of our minors, students gain the tools to create more vibrant and just places for all.

UMD Researchers Find Homeownership Increasingly Out of Reach for Marylanders

Sluggish new housing construction in Maryland is driving up prices and contributing to residents' inability to achieve the American dream of homeownership, according to a new University of Maryland study.Conducted by researchers at UMD’s National Center for Smart Growth (NCSG) for the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, the report released on Thursday indicates that the state needs to build nearly 600,000 new homes by 2045 to keep pace with the projected rate of household growth.
