Juan Luis Burke (PhD, McGill University) is Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research explores the early modern history and theory of architecture and urbanism in Mexico, as well as its connections with Spain and Italy, with a particular focus on the intersections of architectural form, urban governance, race, and the politics of empire. He is the author of 'Architecture and Urbanism in Viceregal Mexico: Puebla de los Ángeles, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries' (Routledge, 2021), and has published in venues such as Latin American and Latinx Visual Culture, Bitácora arquitectura (UNAM), H-Art (Universidad de los Andes), and the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians (JSAH), where his recent contributions include essays on Indigenous knowledge systems, architectural militarization, and colonial race-making. His chapter “The Conversion of the Built Environment: Classical Architecture and Urbanism as a Form of Colonisation in Viceregal Mexico” appears in Conversion Machines (University of Edinburgh Press, 2023). Burke has held fellowships from the NEH and the Society of Architectural Historians.
