Transportation Planner (Project Planning)

This position is located in the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Planning and Sustainability Division (PSD), Project Planning Branch. The incumbent will manage large multimodal corridor planning studies. The incumbent should have an urban planning background and skills to conduct multimodal safety and design projects.

The primary responsibilities within the Project Planning Branch include Project Management, development and evaluation of conceptual design alternatives, community engagement, environmental evaluation and approvals, and initial right-of-way evaluations. Serves as a technical advisor for multimodal design and transportation planning projects. Ensures that all plans and policies will further the District’s Vision Zero and multimodal goals.

Responsibilities

Serves as the expert technical advisor in all phases of transportation planning, traffic engineering, operations, and roadway design. Manages large-scale transportation planning and infrastructure investment projects across multiple modes. Prepares scopes of work and oversees projects through procurement and execution to ensure high quality results and publication-ready reports. Manage consultants including schedules, design process, public engagement, technical analysis, and quality control for multimodal transportation projects. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and determine resource requirements for quick-build, short-term, mid-term and long-term design and operations projects. Prepares technical and other materials as necessary for review, reporting, and decision-making by management and leadership.

Qualifications

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- accounting, business administration, business or commercial law, commerce, economics, engineering, finance, industrial management, statistics, traffic management, transportation, motor mechanics, or other fields related to the position.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, at least one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s in urban or community planning, transportation planning, or transportation engineering. Minimum of five (5) years of transportation planning and design experience with increasing responsibility. Background in transportation planning, conceptual design, and traffic/civil engineering. Master’s degree, preferred.
