Transportation Planner IV

Fairfax County, a diverse, dynamic and growing jurisdiction in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area is seeking a highly motivated and qualified transportation professional to work across multiple disciplines in the transportation planning field.

Responsibilities include:

 

·Provides overall coordination of complex capital project plans and studies with other county, state and federal agencies, as well as residents and elected officials. This includes multi-modal projects, such as intersection, roadway, pedestrian, bicycle, transit and parking facilities.

·Recommends projects for future funding programs, reviews traffic data and provides transportation planning analyses.

·Serves as team leader to oversee and review technical work of assigned staff, including professional engineering, planning, and technical staff engaged in capital project scoping, plans, studies, reports, and other activities as assigned.

·Organizes staff and other resources to ensure that objectives and schedules are developed and met. Reviews staff performance.

·May oversee management of capital projects database, GIS information and analysis, preparation of reports and cost estimation.

·Participation in meetings with other County and outside agencies, the development community, residents, advisory groups, task forces, and elected officials.

·Off-site meetings and site visits may require the operation of a personal and/or county vehicle.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field, plus five years of progressively responsible transportation planning related experience. The years of experience should include at least one year in the specific area of assignment (for e.g., SAS, Modeling, Facilities Maintenance, et al).

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or religious reasons will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Otherwise, vaccinated employees will complete the attestation online in the first day of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

·Experience in transportation planning, traffic engineering, and/or transportation design for roadway and multi-modal projects;

·Strong project management skills, ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities;

·Experience in data management and GIS information and analysis;

·Experience in coordinating with local, state, and federal government entities, as well as elected officials;

·Strong analytical skills, excellent written and oral communication skills;

·Professional license in engineering or planning;

·Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with government officials, the development community, colleagues, and the general public;

·Experience in supervising professional transportation planners, engineers, and technicians.
