Traffic Safety Communications Coordinator (Coordinator I)

The Safety Communications Coordinator develops and delivers public messaging and communications about traffic safety.  The position works in direct collaboration with Safe Routes to School, Vision Zero and other program teams that engage people across the city.  The Safety Communications Coordinator will deliver messaging campaigns, and ongoing and regular program communications.  The successful candidate is a member of the Safety Section within the Active Transportation and Safety (ATS) Division.

The Active Transportation and Safety Division (ATS) is located within PBOT’s Policy, Planning and Projects Group. The Division works to increase the number of people safely walking, bicycling, and taking transit; people-based programming is central to this goal. We are committed to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries and believe safety work is grounded in prevention and building a safe system for all people. All ATS programs are grounded in racial equity and seek to advance PBOT’s work to become an inclusive, anti-racist organization.

Responsibilities

What you'll get to do: 

  • Develop content for varied forms of communication to the public and internal stakeholders, including e-newsletters, social media, and technical reports 
  • Respond to public inquiries about safety programs, projects, and issues for the Vision Zero and Safe Routes to School programs  
  • Collaborate across the Safety Section to create annual traffic safety communications summaries, including work on infrastructure projects, direct education, outreach, and broad media campaigns
  • Plan and manage a year-long safety communications schedule and calendar
  • Lead development of annual reporting on key traffic safety program and projects
  • Develop digital and print materials including regular e-newsletters for Vision Zero and Safe Routes to School programs 
  • Create and distribute school or family-focused messaging for planning and construction projects across the city
  • Coordinate with PBOT Communications team on news blogs, press releases and other public facing media content 
  • Develop print materials and program specific collateral for outreach and education safety programs 
  • Develop and maintain ongoing safety messaging calendar for the Safety Section and in collaboration with PBOT Communications 
  • Complete copy editing and review on programmatic reports and other documents 
  • Develop annual program reports for Vision Zero and Safe Routes to School
  • Manage implementation details for an annual safety media campaign in the public realm
  • Provide design and production support for program documents and presentations
  • Answer and route program phone and email messages from the public for the Safety Section
Qualifications

An Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Advanced graphics or media communications experience
  • Experience with copy editing and report production
  • Knowledge of transportation/traffic safety policy and principles
  • Experience of knowledge of basic video production

To Qualify

  1. Experience using effective communication techniques to explain program policies and regulations to a variety of individuals and groups
  2. Experience and strong expertise creating written content and graphics for newsletters, social media, and other media  
  3. Experience researching and resolving program inquires and complaints, compiling information and materials, and responding to requests for information 
  4. Experience applying effective conflict resolution techniques and the ability to remain calm and professional when answering questions
  5. Experience designing print and digital materials
  6. Experience managing multiple timelines and project schedules simultaneously

Applicant must also possess:
Familiarity with Adobe Design Suite (Illustrator, InDesign)
