Special Projects Coordinator - Community Development

 The City of Takoma Park seeks a part-time (20 hours/week) Special Projects Coordinator to support the Planning Division’s pedestrian and bike safety programming, including the City’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. This Coordinator develops events, programs and instructional activities to enhance walking and biking in the City. This role communicates and coordinates with community organizations, local law enforcement, advocacy groups and city/county/state officials, and supports a variety of SRTS City initiatives. The coordinator will work closely with the administrators and PTAs of five local elementary and middle schools to develop a variety of school-based programs and identify infrastructure and policies to support safer walking and biking.

Responsibilities

Typical duties include:

Coordinating, supporting, and/or facilitating bicycle and pedestrian safety events, programming, and policy;
Providing direct, hands-on instruction with programs that will lead to more walking and biking in participating schools; researching pedestrian and bike safety topic areas; developing curricula and models; developing, planning, and conducting trainings for individuals; scheduling in-school educational programs; distributing, collecting, and analyzing related survey and evaluation data;
Tracking project goals and objectives for grant-funded and other initiatives; monitoring program budgets.
Writing grant documents, reports, and evaluations in collaboration with the Grants Coordinator, completing monthly reports;
Developing and maintaining strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including school administrators, Parent Teacher Associations, relevant city and county staff, law enforcement, and community partners; attending and presenting at community meetings;
Coordinatinh details, logistics, volunteers, and vendors for outreach and educational events; recruiting and supervising the work of volunteers;
Developing and implementing marketing, promotional, and public relations plans, utilizing traditional and social media outlets; writing articles and press releases; updating relevant City website resources;
Collaborating with Planning Division and Public Works Department personnel on infrastructure projects; developing and attending related community engagement events; interfacing with project vendors, school administrators, and residents;
Answering email from residents, vendors, government representatives, and stakeholders; procuring materials and requesting payments;
Performing related duties.

Qualifications


Knowledge, skills and abilities required to be successful are:

Experience with program development, e.g., planning, managing, coordinating, and administering;
Experience presenting educational content in large group and individual settings;
Composing, proofing and editing a variety of business documents, using proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in application materials;
Experience working collaboratively as a member of a team;
Experience promoting activities using skills such as writing, advertising and design;
Experience preparing reports;
Experience working with spreadsheet and word processing platforms, including Microsoft and Google Suites;
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision while prioritizing projects simultaneously to meet deadlines.
  

Minimum qualifications include:

Any combination of education, training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job;
Ability to work occasional early morning, evening, or weekend events;
Must be able to lift, carry and/or otherwise move 35 lbs., with or without accommodation

Instructions

This position is subject to membership in the AFSCME union. The hourly wage for this position is expected to be between $28.79 to $33.91 per hour and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. The City telework policy allows remote work up to 60 percent time.
