Senior Transportation Planner

Senior Planners work proactively with public, private, and nonprofit planning partners to implement places2040 (the Lancaster County comprehensive plan) and other countywide plans and policies. They coordinate programs and projects in functional areas of planning and/or a particular geographical area.

Responsibilities

Senior Planners on the Land Use & Transportation Team provide technical assistance -- both internally and externally -- in land use and transportation, housing, environment, heritage conservation, placemaking, and data analysis. They may be assigned areas of specialization, and serve as liaisons to public and nonprofit planning partners who focus on these areas. This particular position focuses on transportation and its relationship with land use planning. Another key responsibility of the Senior Transportation Planner is coordinating the selection of projects included in the $74 million annual budget of the Lancaster County Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). In addition, this position coordinates the Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP), selected grant programs, and transportation projects. This position also leads the work of the Active Transportation Advisory Committee (ATAC) and assists with the functioning of the Lancaster Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and its committees.

Qualifications

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in planning or a related field and 3 years' experience in planning, or a bachelor's degree in planning or a related field and 5 years' experience in planning -- or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability to perform this job.

The ideal candidate has the desire to utilize data to provide guidance that facilitates discussion concerning complicated transportation funding decisions. The ability to present to the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the ability to work within a team to develop recommendations and counterpoints to arguments in a constructive environment.
