Preservation Manager, Metro-Boston Region

Historic New England seeks an experienced Preservation Manager to oversee preservation, maintenance, and capital improvements of structures and landscapes at a collection of assigned properties located in the Metro-Boston area. Self-motivated and collaborative with a broad knowledge of historic property care standards, the Preservation Manager, Metro-Boston Region works closely with landscape and carpentry crew staff, collections staff, historic site managers who manage day-to-day operation of the properties, and the development office in raising funds for work.

Responsibilities

The Preservation Manager, Metro-Boston Region is responsible for the following primary functions and other duties as assigned:

  • Regularly surveys properties to ensure a full understanding of property needs and issues; documents existing conditions, and researches preservation issues
  • Develops and maintains a list of preservation, capital improvement and maintenance needs for assigned properties
  • Proposes a prioritized annual work plan and budget and then manages the approved plan
  • Creates construction documents, coordinates the bidding process, selects contractor(s)
  • Oversees and documents repair and maintenance work; approves contractor work; approves and processes contract payments
  • Identifies potential funding sources for projects and works with development team to develop grant proposals and funding requests as assigned and on deadline
  • Coordinates or directs maintenance activities for the sites, working with property care staff, site and functions staff to ensure needs are met
  • Participates in collaborative work groups with other regional staff, together responsible for the care and operation of properties in this region
  • Performs or assists in building and landscape maintenance tasks, site, or institutional support tasks and responds to emergencies at the sites
Qualifications
  • New England residency required
  • Master’s degree in historic preservation, architecture, engineering, conservation or a related field and at least two years of experience; Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four years of job-related experience; or six years of job-related experience under the supervision of a preservation professional
  • Requires fully competent computer skills including skilled use of MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel spreadsheet functions, e-mail, and digital photography
  • Must be able to operate effectively in a team environment, where communication within and among the teams is essential to success
  • Ability to interact diplomatically and communicate effectively orally and in writing is essential
  • Requires problem solving skills and ability to effectively plan and implement work processes to complete tasks according to schedule
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and means of transportation
  • Verification of full COVID-19 vaccination status or exemption approved by Historic New England prior to the start date of employment

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with facility management, project management, HVAC, other mechanical systems and security equipment desirable
  • Use of minor tools and ability to perform minor maintenance a plus
