Planning Intern

Montgomery County Planning Department is actively seeking four (4) highly motivated undergraduate and graduate Planning Interns with an interest and anticipate careers in urban planning and design, architecture, landscape architecture, and graphic design to work with us this summer. Joining our paid internship program means you will have the opportunity to dive into exciting plans and projects, apply smart growth strategies to cultivate dynamic urban centers and encourage great community design!

   The Montgomery County Planning Department is part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a 90-year old, nationally recognized organization serving the vibrant and culturally diverse populations of Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties on the border of Washington, D.C. We provide county-wide planning functions including long range planning, as well as reviews of development applications in a diverse built environment of downtown urban districts, suburban communities, and agricultural areas.   • Interns can work up to 37 hours/week (max);
  • Relocation and housing are not provided.

Responsibilities
Examples of Important Duties
 

Planning Interns will assist with:

  • Outreach support for the Takoma Park Minor Master Plan Amendment
  • Outreach support for the Great Seneca Science Corridor Master Plan Amendment
  • Online support for the Purple Line Development Tracking tool
  • Data collection and analysis for master plan work
  • Community engagement events
  • Development inquiries, property research and prior entitlements
  • Preparing GIS maps, graphs, and illustrations
  • Report writing for regulatory applications
  • Graphic creation of informative design guidelines for planning staff, property owners, and the development community.
Qualifications

Student Eligibility
Students must currently be enrolled in one of the above-mentioned subject areas at a college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level and must have a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Intern I 
Currently enrolled in college pursuing either an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree or attending a technical school pursuing a professional license in a field of study related to the discipline of the area to which assigned.  This position pays at a rate of $15.00/hr to $20.05/hr dependent on qualifications and experience.
 
Intern II 
Student who has received a Bachelor's Degree and accepted or enrolled in a Master's Degree Program in a field of study related to the discipline of the area to which assigned. This position pays at a rate of $15.25/hr to $23.63/hr dependent on qualifications and experience.

Helpful Skills and Software Proficiency: Excellent oral and written communication skills, research/analytical skills, quantitative skills, and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with GIS, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Creative Cloud, SketchUp, and Microsoft Office 365 is a plus.
