Northern New England Greenway Manager

The Northern New England Greenway Manager is a full-time position that carries multi-state  responsibilities for all aspects of greenway development, partnerships, volunteer engagement, and greenway advocacy tasks in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. The Northern New England Manager works under the direction of the National Greenway Director in coordination with other East Coast Greenway Alliance (ECGA) staff.

This position will implement programs that support the ECGA Strategic Plan and specific strategies and goals in the region. The right candidate will grow, support, and empower our volunteers in the state and must be able to travel frequently within the region for meetings, events, and site visits. Work will entail planning, design, grant writing, relationship building, coalition building, data collection, field investigations, and performing technical and GIS data analysis. Responsibilities
  • Complete and monitor East Coast Greenway (ECG) signage throughout the states and update the ECGA online trip planner (map.greenway.org). Work to move a maximum amount of the on-road portions off-road (including designating trail as official ECG) and make remaining on-road sections as safe and bicycle/pedestrian-friendly as feasible.
  • Keep the GIS data-reporting system up-to-date and create reports as requested (at least quarterly). 
  • Assist our volunteer State Committees and other volunteers within the state.
  • Build/maintain a strong network of strategic alliances with public agencies, elected officials, and organizations in each state to continue strong Greenway progress. Keep contacts updated in organization CRM. 
  • Communicate state information in coordination with other staff for the ECGA website, newsletters, and social media. Engage local media with support from the ECGA communications team.
  • Provide timely information to assist with overall fundraising efforts in the region.

  • Self-starter. Ability to work independently and set strategy for the region.
  • Able to travel throughout the region for meetings and events.
  • Demonstrated leadership in implementing greenway projects that promote transportation equity.  
  • Track record engaging and motivating volunteers.
  • Three years or more project management and/or program experience in a relevant area such as greenway development, environmental policy, public health, or community organizing.
  • Education and work experience: Bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning, transportation planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture and/or combination of relevant professional experience.  
  • Nonprofit experience is preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with GIS mapping software and willingness to learn. Experience with GIS mapping is preferred. The alliance utilizes QGIS for mapping and data management; maintaining the route map in QGIS for the region is a requirement of the role.
  • Strong computer skills: Proficient in Google platforms. Can easily create Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.
