Intern

Building Conservation Associates, Inc. (BCA) is accepting applications for a paid internship in the BCA Washington DC office, located in the Washington DC metro area, from November 2020 through May 2021.

BCA is a nationally recognized consulting firm specializing in architectural materials conservation and historic preservation. Over the course of more than 30 years in business, BCA has documented, assessed and assisted in the preservation of hundreds of historic buildings, the majority of which are on the National Register of Historic Places and many of which are National Historic Landmarks. BCA’s staff includes building conservators, preservation architects, historic preservationists, historians and preservation planners. With its headquarters in New York City and regional offices in Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington DC, BCA works on projects throughout the United States.

Current projects in the Washington DC area include: construction administration for masonry conservation and repairs of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial; the renovation of exterior and interior historic fabric at the McKim, Mead, and White former Officer’s Club at Fort McNair; exterior concrete and masonry repairs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; and the analysis and interpretation of historic materials at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Park. BCA interns are actively engaged in project-related activities such as research, site surveys and documentation, report writing, drawing preparation, and construction administration tasks.

Responsibilities

It is anticipated that the intern will work between 6-10 hours per week (typically 8 hours per week). Ideally, the intern would be able to commit to working one full day (8 hours) each week. However, we understand that it can be difficult for students to commit to such a schedule given class schedules, so we will be flexible and will work out a schedule that is amenable to both the intern and BCA.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the intern will primarily work remotely with regular virtual instruction/supervision. The selected intern is required to provide their own computer and reliable internet connection. Willingness and ability to occasionally travel to local Washington DC-area sites is also required, as the work will include both field and office work.

Instructions

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, resume, and two writing samples to Kevin Wohlgemuth at kwohlgemuth@bcausa.com. All writing samples must be of sole authorship. Applications will be accepted until October 31, 2020
