Historic Preservation Specialist

Assist the Director of the Division of Historic Preservation / Executive Director of the City of Paterson Historic Preservation Commission in the day-to-day administration of the Division and Commission’s responsibilities and office management.

Responsibilities

Duties: Duties include among others: research for HP design reviews, draft staff reports, conduct site visits, meet with applicants, attend meetings and carry out special research assignments.  Administrative duties include office correspondence, record keeping, filing, billing, reviewing applications, preparing mailings, coordination of activities, meetings, and small projects.  Also maintains and updates a small library and electronic data collections.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or  university with at least a Bachelor’s degree in Historic Preservation, History, Anthropology, Architecture, Architectural History, Landscape Architecture, Anthropology or Archaeology, or in a related field with significant course work in one of the above-named fields (college transcript and diploma must be submitted) including or supplemented by twenty-one (21) semester hour credits in professional planning subjects such as land use planning, historic city planning, planning  project design, or planning law and administration may be substituted for the indicated education requirement. NOTE: Possession of a valid certificate as a Registered Architect issued by the NJ Board of Registered Architects may be substituted for the required education. Possession of a valid license as a Professional Planner issued by the NJ State Board of Professional Planners may be substituted for the required education.

Experience: 1-3 years of experience working in historic preservation planning or closely related field, such as preparation of technical reports, historic research, architectural history, office administration and/or other professional experience related to the urban planning, archaeology, history or architecture fields. A Master’s degree in one of the listed disciplines may be substituted for one (1) year of the required work experience.

License: A valid NJ driver’s license is required.

Residency: Must be a NJ resident upon acceptance of position.

Essential Skills: Strong computer literacy, focused on the Microsoft Word Suite, Adobe software, and Windows OS; Strong office management and organizational skills; data management; high level verbal and written communication; ability to work independently on several projects at once; successfully work under deadlines; knowledge of historic research techniques.

Desirable Skills: ability to evaluate applications based on guidelines and standards; ability to read architectural plans and maps; knowledge of digital photography, scanning and printing; ability to prepare and deliver public presentations.
