Historic Preservation Coordinator

 

The Kentucky Heritage Council (KHC) is an agency of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet and serves as the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The agency is responsible for carrying out the identification, protection and preservation of prehistoric resources and historic buildings, sites and other cultural and historic properties throughout the Commonwealth. The Historic Preservation Coordinator position (National Register of Historic Places (NR) Coordinator) is responsible for working with the public, the Governor-appointed State Historic Preservation Review Board and the National Register Program in Washington, D.C. to assist in the development, review, approval and processing of nominations from Kentucky to the National Register of Historic Places. This position is also responsible for the review and approval of Part I applications submitted by project proponents who seek to qualify for state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Administers the National Register of Historic Places program for the Kentucky Heritage Council (SHPO) as mandated by federal law (NHPA/36CFR Part 800).
  • Works closely with nomination preparers, the Kentucky Historic Preservation Review Board and the National Park Service to add significant historic properties in Kentucky to the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Coordinates with Certified Local Governments (CLG’s) on properties being nominated to the National Register that are within their jurisdiction.
  • Conducts public meetings on National Register nominations as appropriate.
  • Provides assistance to the agency’s Site Development Program by reviewing Part I Historic Preservation Tax Credit applications at the state and federal level.
  • Works closely with the agency’s Survey Coordinator and CLG Coordinator to ensure National Register related grant awards are managed appropriately.
  • Manages data related to the National Register program and responds to requests for information from constituents.
  • Provides periodic training on the National Register process at conference sessions, symposia, workshops and public meetings.
  • Works closely with other programs administered by KHC.
Qualifications

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a master's degree in architectural history, American studies, American civilization, folklore, cultural geography, historic preservation, early American culture, museum management, art history or a related field.

 

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Four years experience in historic preservation programs.

 

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

 

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional experience in historic preservation will substitute for the master's degree on a year-for-year basis.
