This position is located in NPS Regional Office Serving Interior Regions 6,7 and 8, in the Resources Stewardship and Science Directorate.

Responsibilities
  • Supports the legacy Intermountain regional Heritage Partnerships Program in the identification, nomination, and monitoring of National Historic Landmark properties.
  • Conducts historic research for the purposes of completing National Historic Landmark nominations and letters of inquiry.
  • Coordinates National Historic Preservation Act section 106 consultation and compliance activities as they relate to National Historic Landmark properties.
  • Collaborates on interdisciplinary teams at the regional and national level to promote cultural resource and historic preservation stewardship goals.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relations with a wide range of stakeholders including federal agencies, state historic preservation office, tribal historic preservation offices, NHL site stewards, and the public.
Qualifications

Basic Education Requirements for Historian, GS-0170: Degree in history or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history OR possess a combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the Basic Education, you must also meet the following specialized experience requirement for the GS-12 Historian.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Experience at this level must include all of the following: Basic knowledge of historic preservation best parctices; knowledge of cultural resources common to Intermountain west, together with broad working knowledge of American history in the West and a specialized understanding of National Register of Historic Places and/or National Historic Landmark nomination processes; understanding of the laws, regulations, and policies related to cultural resources management in order to provide advice to management concerning the identification and preservation of cultural resources; understanding basic research methods in history, including the ability to collect and analyze historical data, synthesize large quantities of information, and to interpret the material for various audiences in written and oral communication; ability to plan and implement complex historical research programs to meet resource stewardship needs in a cost-effective, timely, and professional manner; knowledge of methods and practices in related fields such as museum management, archeology, cultural anthropology, historical architecture, historical landscape architecture, and natural resources management. You must include hours per week worked.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
