Graduate Internships

The Graduate Internship program provides training and work experience in departments across Getty that prepare graduate students for visual arts careers.

Graduate Internships are offered in the four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust—the Getty Museum, the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Research Institute, and the Getty Foundation—and in Getty Publications and Getty Digital. Placements are typically available in areas such as curatorial, education, conservation, research, publications, web and new media, public programs, digital projects, and grantmaking.

Please review the list of internship opportunities and host departments participating in 2023–2024. Using the online Fluxx application, you must select two positions in order of preference.

  • Terms of the Grant

Internships are located at the Getty Center in Los Angeles or the Getty Villa in Malibu. All positions are full-time for 12 months from September 11, 2023 through August 30, 2024.

Getty requires COVID-19 vaccination for all staff, including Getty Graduate Interns. Limited exceptions may be granted for medical reasons, disability, or sincerely held religious beliefs. If an intern wishes to request an exception, that must be done within seven (7) calendar days of the first day of the internship

The grant amount is $47,500 for twelve months, plus $1,500 towards relocation expenses if the intern is coming from outside the Los Angeles area. Housing is not provided. Support for research travel is available for up to $2,500. Graduate Interns are eligible to enroll in the Getty's health care plan. Please note that grant funds may be subject to federal and state taxes and deductions. Please see important information about the terms of these grants here.

  • Intern and Trainee Visa Categories

In order to participate in a Getty internship program, foreign nationals must enter the U.S. with a J-1 visa in the Intern or Trainee category or must be in compliance with the U.S. Department of State Requirements of the F-1 Visa Program. Students who are in F-1 status when submitting a Getty internship application but who will have completed their studies (received their U.S. degree) before the start of the Getty internship, must allow for sufficient time outside the U.S. before applying for a J-1 visa.

Detailed information on visa categories, timing, and requirements is available from the Getty's Office of Scholars, Interns, and Professionals (OSIP). OSIP provides centralized administrative assistance, including support for the visa process, to Getty Trust grant recipients such as graduate interns, before and during their residence at the Getty.
