Executive Director

The Executive Director provides leadership, management and oversight for all aspects of Restore Oregon including programs, finances, resource development, human resources, member services, communications, and board development. The Executive Director works with the Board and Board committees to establish an overall vision for the organization and takes the lead in implementing the policies and programs that derive from that vision. The Executive Director maintains key relationships throughout the state with partner and collaborator stakeholders, businesses, foundations, government officials, and other nonprofits.

Staff: The Executive Director will oversee a six-person staff that includes a Director of Development (full-time), a Programs Director (full-time), a Special Project Manager (full-time), a Marketing Manager (part-time), a Development and Programs Associate (full-time), and an Office Manager (part-time).

Responsibilities

Communicate the Importance of Historic Preservation

  • Develop a communication strategy to foster Restore Oregon’s role as a “go to” expert on historic preservation issues and a trusted source to the public, policymakers, and general media on preservation policy.
  • Develop the capacity to convene stakeholders throughout the state around statewide issues affecting historic preservation.
  • Develop relationships with the media, organizations, and persons pertinent to historic preservation, coordinate activities and co-sponsor events.

Lead and Develop Statewide Advocacy Efforts

  • Ensure the organization is a proactive advocate for preservation-related issues across the state.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local, state and national organizations and government officials so that Restore Oregon remains a valued source and thought leader on preservation policy issues.

Engage Stakeholders and Members with Impactful Programs

  • Serve as lead spokesperson for Restore Oregon and ensure that the organization’s mission is properly presented to diverse audiences. 
  • Oversee the development of high-quality preservation programs and services consistent with the needs of the sector.
  • Oversee development and coordination of events and programs, conferences, workshops, publications, website, and endorsed service provider relationships.
  • Set up systems to track processes and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders and other constituents.

Provide Overall Strategic Direction with the Board of Directors

  • Work with the Board to ensure that Restore Oregon operates with a clear mission and a strategic plan consistent with that mission. 
  • Maintain thorough communication with the Board, providing necessary background information to support informed decision making by the Board. 
  • Actively engage the Board and its committees, partnering with Board members to leverage their specific talents and knowledge to advance Restore Oregon.
  • Work with the Board annually to establish Key Performance Indicators and report on them.

Manage Restore Oregon’s Finances and Fundraising Efforts

  • Develop an annual budget and fundraising plan for review and approval by the Board.
  • Develop relationships with funders. Identify grant opportunities, oversee proposal development and produce required reporting to funding sources.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial practices and reports.

Manage Organizational and Staff Operations

  • Provide overall staff direction, support and supervision.
  • Develop a yearly work plan with staff that includes goals, objectives, inputs and outcomes, and timeline for the programs and services to be carried out. Provide ongoing management to ensure the organization operates according to approved plans and budgets.
  • Utilize outside vendors, professional organizations, and other strategic relationships to advance Restore Oregon’s issues and strategies, as needed.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university, with major work in field related to business, public administration, planning, historic preservation preferred.
  • Five years’ experience in nonprofit management, public relations, public administration, business, organizational development, and/or team-oriented work. 
  • Nonprofit leadership experience is strongly preferred.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Significant and proven leadership skills developed through several years in one or more senior management positions. Excellent organizational development, interpersonal, marketing, communication, administrative, and personnel management skills are essential.
  • Critical skills and experience in as many of the following areas as possible:
    • fundraising
    • communications/networking
    • marketing
    • financial expertise/budgeting
    • nonprofit or small business management experience
    • general management experience
    • public speaking and public relations
    • strategic planning and organizational development
    • historic preservation
  • Ability to engage effectively with a wide variety of entities, including historic preservation groups, business interests, government agencies and neighborhood associations.
  • A demonstrated affinity for working with culturally and politically diverse communities and a deep commitment to pursuing approaches to historic preservation that are equitable and inclusive. 
  • Success at fund development, including knowledge of and success in attracting foundation and corporate grants; ability to identify, steward and solicit individual donors. 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, as well as strong presentation skills.
  • The ability to foster a healthy organizational culture; to encourage teamwork and collaboration; to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills that include the ability to inspire and motivate; and be effective at conflict management.
  • Experience working with elected officials and state/local government on complex policy issues.
  • A deep and demonstrable passion for the mission of Restore Oregon.
