Educational Facility Planner

Develops the educational program for new schools; maintains District educational specifications; conducts space planning for schools and administrative/support spaces; documents space usage within the District's portfolio. A critical component of Facilities Planning is ensuring that the specific functional, spatial and environmental requirements for the many diverse academic needs of a school are considered and incorporated into the designs. The educational facility planner will play a critical role in planning educational buildings that foster great learning for decades to come.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and prepares the site-specific educational specifications for each school, which define the programmatic, functional, spatial and environmental requirements of the educational facility.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to develop site-specific adaptations of the educational specifications, incorporating feedback obtained into the site-specific planning for each school.
  • Facilitates the educational specification review process with schools to determine facility requirements, and consider budget implications of the requests needed, to ensure adequate space for educational programs and administrative functions is available and provided.
  • Partners with project managers and design teams from educational specification development into the feasibility study phase, and through construction document completion of the projects to ensure that educational specifications concepts (square footage, adjacencies, proportions, etc.) have been appropriately interpreted in the design.
  • Reviews feasibility studies and architectural submissions and visits construction sites periodically to ensure compliance with educational standards and to develop 'lessons learned' for incorporation into the standards updates.
  • Creates swing space floor plans and to-from move plans for the relocation of schools.
  • Completes inventories of space usage throughout the District and supports maintenance of the corresponding database.
  • Develops processes so that floor plan and space usage information is up-to-date and accessible
  • Updates floor plans based upon site visits and completed projects.
  • Compiles and manages project information, such as enrollment, capacity, net and gross square footage, site size, etc., for the final projects.
  • Assists with other planning related projects as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in architecture or related field. Degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Knowledge of educational facilities architecture and engineering planning and design.
  • Valid class C non-commercial driver's license.
  • Ability to read and decipher site and floor plans, construction documents, and maps.
  • Advanced skills in the use of CAD; Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; and Adobe InDesign and Acrobat.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and critical thinking in problem-solving situations.
  • Ability to plan and organize information effectively, and present information in a concise and understandable manner.
  • Ability to independently complete assignments accurately and within specified time lines.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of stakeholders.
  • Good interpersonal, presentation, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize ongoing and multiple projects and to address multiple tasks at the same time.
