Director's Office – Planning & Design Intern II

If so, the Montgomery County Planning Department is where you want to be! We are currently seeking a driven Intern II to help with various projects within our Director’s Office.

Montgomery Planning is part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). For over 90 years, M-NCPPC has had a national reputation for excellence in planning, and today serves a culturally diverse population of over one million people on the border of Washington, DC in Montgomery County. We provide county-wide planning functions including long range planning, as well as reviews of development applications in diverse built environments of downtown urban districts, suburban communities, and agricultural areas. We have pioneered nationally modeled programs in agricultural preservation, inclusionary housing, and transit-oriented design. Program Dates & Additional Information: Internship will run until May 2023. Intern will work between 24-32 hours/week in a hybrid on-site and telework format. Relocation and housing are not provided.

Student Eligibility: Students must currently be enrolled in one of the above-mentioned subject areas at a college or university at the graduate level and must have a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Responsibilities

his position will:

Support the assistant to the Deputy Director, working on impactful projects such as updating the county’s Public Benefits Policy, facilitating placemaking & community engagement activities, and helping with the design review of various development projects throughout the county.

The selected candidate will be exposed to a range of professional experiences, from long range policy planning to on-the ground implementation and community engagement. The desired candidate should have a solid grasp of Smart Growth planning principles and a basic understanding of municipal planning processes. Candidates must demonstrate strong verbal and written communications skills and be able to put together memos, reports and graphics using Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite products. Experience with community engagement is desired but not mandatory.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Student who has received a Bachelor's degree and accepted or enrolled in a Master's degree program in a field of study related to the discipline of the area to which assigned.

Instructions

Students must attach a copy of a college transcript to the application. An unofficial transcript is acceptable. Students must attach a personal statement to the application, indicating goals and aspirations that may be enhanced by participating in the program. Statements must be at least one page long.
