Director of Programs

The Association for Neighborhood & Housing Development (ANHD) is seeking a Director of Programs to lead ANHD’s training and leadership development programs to strengthen community organizing and the non-profit community development field.

The Director of Programs will oversee the programs, leadership development and trainings for the organization, spanning multiple issue areas and including the longstanding Affordable Housing InstituteCenter for Community Leadership & the Morgan Stanley Community Development Graduate Fellowship. This position will report directly to the Executive Director and will work closely with ANHD’s department directors, and capacity building staff team.

Responsibilities

The Director of Programs leads the development and implementation of programs for the broader community development sector. This includes programming to develop the skills, abilities, and knowledge of 500+ New Yorkers passionate about affordable housing, community development, and grassroots organizing.

  • Develop programming to build the capacity of the community development sector, strengthen neighborhood organizing, and deepen the connection between community development corporations (CDCs) and tenant organizing. 
  • Engage and energize department staff, fellows, instructors, partners, and supporters through communications and systems of support.
  • Manage and develop a diverse, high-performing Capacity Building team comprised of full-time staff, part-time staff, and consultants.
  • Lead program staff and consultants in the recruitment, management, and development of our 10-month capacity building programs for ANHD members and allies in the community development field.
  • Oversee department staff in the planning of workshops to develop the practical and technical skills of tenant organizers and affordable housing developers.
  • Contribute to ANHD’s organizational management and development
    • Work with Executive Director and senior management team to ensure strategic collaboration and alignment across ANHD’s departments. 
    • Supervise capacity building staff across ANHD’s work areas
    • Support fundraising for ANHD’s capacity building work, including tracking goals and providing content and insight for proposals, reports, renewals, and attending site visits.
    • Monitor and review program budgets for capacity building programs.
    • Support the development and implementation of systems and structures to generate a stronger work environment and impact.
    • Develop communications strategy in partnership with communications and capacity building staff to maximize impact of external messaging

ANHD’s current suite of Capacity Building Programs include the following:

  • The Center for Community Leadership (CCL) trains new and senior organizers at community-based organizations with the skills, resources, and networking opportunities needed to strengthen their advocacy and drive sustainable community change at local and regional levels.
  • The Morgan Stanley Community Development Graduate Fellowship pairs nine masters-level university students with ANHD member community development corporations (CDCs) to support projects in the fields of affordable housing, economic development, or community planning.
  • The Housing Preservation Initiative (HPI) supports local groups to work with neighborhood residents and to develop strategic neighborhood-based solutions that directly address specific threats to their neighborhood’s affordable housing stock.
  • The Community Consultant Contract (CCC) supports front-line anti-displacement services in local groups, including anti-displacement specialists who work with community residents and constituent service staff to fight evictions and foreclosures.
  • The Affordable Housing Institute (AHI) provides trainings to community development practitioners on housing development, long term asset management, sustainability, and strategic development opportunities
Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • At least 3 years of experience in program management and development. Experience in community organizing, community development, or related field required.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience having either developed and launched a successful initiative or taken an existing initiative to the next stage of growth and impact.
  • Demonstrated experience running cohort-based multi-month leadership development programs.
  • Ability to oversee several multi-pronged programs with overlapping timelines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with comfortability navigating diverse types of audiences.
  • Collaborative work style that meaningfully engages staff, program participants, consultants, and institutional funders.
  • Robust social emotional intelligence to support the professional development of community organizers and non-profit professionals at various points in their respective careers.
  • Commitment to supporting community-based leadership and empowering marginalized communities.
  • Commitment to racial equity, and comfort applying a racial equity lens to program design and implementation as well as to interpersonal professional interactions and relationships.
  • Alumni of the Morgan Stanley Community Development Graduate Fellowship and/or the Center for Community Leadership encouraged to apply.
