Conservator of Architecture and Monuments

We are a team of professionally trained conservators and artisans specializing in the care of sculpture, historic architecture, and artifacts. Trained in the U.S., Latin America, and Europe, we provide emergency response services, conditions assessments, stabilization, conservation, maintenance, repair, restoration and long-term management of cultural heritage objects and structures. We have particular expertise in modern and contemporary art, monumental outdoor sculpture, Twentieth century buildings, and Latin American art.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Master’s degree from a recognized graduate program in historic preservation. A minimum of 2 – 5 years of post-graduation experience in objects conservation is preferred, though new professionals with exceptional abilities will be considered. Excellent project management, written, verbal and interpersonal skills are required. The majority of work for this position will be in Florida, the southeast, and Midwest, though RLA staff do work throughout the United States. As such, travel to and outside of these regions will be required depending on project need.

Demonstrable skill and ability to prioritize and work independently as well as in collaboration with other team members and outside contractors to meet deadlines on multiple projects is essential. A broad knowledge of materials, architectural history, art, as well as documentation and research techniques is expected. Familiarity with specifying treatments (particularly of metals and masonry) is desired, as is experience with supervision or mentoring of conservation/contract staff, graduate interns and pre-program interns.

Ideally, the conservator should possess a wide range of hand skills and the ability to perform physical tasks in an outdoor setting.

Strong communication and organizational skills.
Treatment practice and documentation must be of an exceptionally high standard.
Excellent written skills in English and ability to compose detailed reports.
General hand-tool skills.
Metal patination (mostly bronze).
Mortar patching/repair and stabilization
Working independently, as well as part of a cohesive team
Facility for MS Word, Adobe, Power Point, Excel
Ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, and aerial platforms at heights.
Ability to work overnight.
Ability to pass government background checks and/or drug screenings based on our client’s requirements.
A valid driver license and car (mileage is reimbursed at the annual GSA rate)
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Overnight travel is required as part of this position and may be out of state. Duration of travel is typically one week per month, though some projects may occasionally require longer periods of travel, not to exceed two weeks at a time per month unless agreed upon by the staff member.
