Community Design Works Program Manager

The Neighborhood Design Center seeks a full time Program Manager to lead ongoing community design efforts in our Baltimore office. This is a significant opportunity to work in partnership with Baltimore’s community leaders who are advocating for and implementing change in city neighborhoods. The candidate will work in a fast-paced, collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with landscape architects, urban planners, architects, foresters, artists and social designers, all committed to social justice.

Responsibilities

The Program Manager manages the implementation of the ongoing Community Design Works program and manages contracted consulting services for planning, community engagement, and design with other nonprofits in the Baltimore area. The Program Manager may supervise intern(s) and service-year staff. For the Community Design Works program, the Program Manager is responsible for responding to community requests for assistance and/or locating eligible communities, scheduling and presenting information at community meetings, and answering questions/addressing concerns from the community. They write memorandums of understanding documenting the scope of work for each project and are responsible for recruiting and coordinating the volunteer design team and/or developing designs. They are also responsible for maintaining meticulous records, reporting out to Baltimore City DHCD, and leading on annual requests for support.

For contracted consulting, NDC provides mission aligned design assistance to nonprofits, agencies, and corporations on a fee-for-service basis or through project-specific grant support. This can include neighborhood planning, community engagement, meeting facilitation, design, and construction management services. For contracted consulting, the Program Manager is responsible for responding to requests for assistance, maintaining positive relationships with NDC partners, and design and performance of the scope of contracted work.

The Program Manager may support the work of other programs within the Neighborhood Design Center as needed. NDC is a small nonprofit work environment, so tasks are varied and occasionally unpredictable. A flexible mindset and willingness to pitch in are highly valued. Neighborhood Design Center is a team-oriented, creative and flexible work environment. The Program Manager reports to the Executive Director, works a 40 hour work week, and will be required to work some evenings and weekends.

 

Tasks include

Program Leadership:

  • Plan the delivery of the program in accordance with mission and strategic goals
  • Manage program grant, including writing annual grant application, and fulfilling ongoing recordkeeping and reporting requirements with opportunity to manage funder relationships and work with NDC leadership on program and organizational budgeting
  • Develop new initiatives to support the NDC Strategic Plan
  • Develop personal goals and objectives that support program advancement
  • Manage Project staff and Service Year volunteers
  • Participate in building team culture 
  • Share the work of NDC and our partners in public forums including conferences, in the the media, and on social media in coordination with the organization's marketing team

 

Project Leadership:

  • Respond to community requests for assistance, lead project scoping and MOUs
  • Lead volunteer recruitment and team formation
  • Coordinate and facilitate community and volunteer meetings and participatory co-design workshops
  • Keep abreast of project-related issues and best practices
  • Assist volunteer design teams with review and packaging design deliverables
  • Respond to community feedback on projects
  • Maintain meticulous project records and correspondence
  • Attend community meetings to share the work of NDC
  • Lead contracted consulting services to non-profit and agency partners
  • Lead neighborhood planning, community engagement, meeting facilitation, architectural or landscape design, and other conceptual design services
  • Respond to requests for assistance, scope projects, estimate cost of services
  • Build positive relationships with NDC partners
  • Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications

Experience we’re seeking

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in public interest or social design, architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, graphic design, or related fields
  • Proven ability to work with a diverse set of stakeholders and clients
  • Experience working directly with residents in neighborhood settings
  • Strong demonstrated personal commitment to community design and social justice
  • Exceptional interpersonal and facilitation skills to present and lead community workshops

 

Job-related skills

  • Strong design or community development skills and and a capacity for project management
  • Outstanding communication skills and natural collaborator
  • Adept relationship builder
  • Real team player with flexible mindset 
  • Facility with Adobe CS and knowledge of AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Sketchup, Revit desirable
