Bull E-Bike Pilot Project Intern

Want to work and help shape the quickly growing realm of community-based and equity-focused e-bike programs? Join the City of Durham’s Transportation Department as an intern supporting the planning and execution of its exciting Bull E-Bike Pilot!

The Pilot

This project centers on adaptive reuse of a fleet of private dockless e-bikes for use by those who need it most, geared at reducing single occupancy vehicle use and at improving access to work in Downtown Durham. The full pilot will run for approximately three months (mid-August to mid-November). Planning and testing are ongoing and will continue until the launch of the pilot; post-pilot, energy will be focused on synthesizing findings. Throughout, the team hopes to embrace human-centered design methods for deeper and more authentic community engagement with the goal of clearly understanding needs prior to deciding on a distribution model.

The project team and stakeholders include:

• City staff

• Bike Durham, our local bike advocacy group and primary engagement partner

• SharedStreets, a transportation technology non-profit who is donating use of the bikes and adapting them for reuse

• the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, our primarily travel behavior data partner

• local bike mechanics

• Bloomberg Philanthropies, the funder of the project via its Mayors Challenge grant and, most importantly,

• the citizens of Durham that make up our target audience.
