Architectural Historian

Citizenship Requirement: Applicants must be citizens, permanent resident aliens, or nationals of the United States. Non-citizens with unrestricted employment authorization from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service may also apply.

Recommended Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Must be familiar with applicable state and federal preservation laws, regulations and standards. Must demonstrate understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act, Chapter 6E, HRS and the Secretary of Interior’s Guidelines Standards for Rehabilitation; and Microsoft Office, GIS, and Arc View.

Skills/Abilities: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal agencies, professional or lay groups, public officials, and the general public; negotiate adequate preservation projective measures; and read and interpret design and construction plans.
Education Required: A bachelor’s degree in in architectural history with concentration in American architecture; or a bachelor’s degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely-related field.

Experience Required: Two (2) years experience in conducting 106 reviews for architectural projects. It is preferred that at least one of the two years experience include reviews of federal and military construction and demolition projects.

Substitutions for Experience:
1. A master’s degree in architecture, architectural history or historic preservation my substitute for one (1) year of experience.
2. A doctorate degree in architecture, architectural history or historic preservation may substitute for two (2) years of experience

Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant’s overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered.

License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid license, type 3 or higher, to drive in the State of Hawaii.
