The Neighborhood Design Center seeks a full-time Project Manager with a passion for community-led design for ongoing architectural and interior design projects. This is a significant opportunity to work in partnership with Maryland’s community leaders who are advocating for and implementing change in their neighborhoods. The candidate will work in a fast-paced, collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with landscape architects, urban planners, architects, foresters, artists and social designers, all committed to social justice.

Responsibilities

What you’ll do

The Architectural and Interior Design Project Manager leads contracted consulting projects, providing mission aligned design assistance to nonprofits, agencies, and corporations on a fee-for-service basis or through project-specific grant support. This can include community engagement, meeting facilitation, code analysis, site feasibility and massing studies, architectural design, and project management and owner’s representative services. For contracted consulting, the Project Manager is responsible for responding to requests for assistance, maintaining positive relationships with NDC partners, the creation of high-quality design products, and timely performance of the scope of contracted work.

 

The Project Manager may support the work of other programs within the Neighborhood Design Center as needed. NDC is a small nonprofit work environment, so tasks are varied and occasionally unpredictable. A flexible mindset and willingness to pitch in are highly valued. Neighborhood Design Center is a team-oriented, creative and flexible work environment. The Project Manager reports to the Architecture and Community Planning Program Director, works a 32-40 hour work week, and will be required to work some evenings and weekends.

Tasks include

  • Design and manage architecture and interior design projects, using creative thinking abilities and contributing to organizational design excellence and responsive problem solving. 
  • Manage project budgets and schedules to keep projects delivery on time and in budget 
  • Design and implement a community engagement strategy in collaboration with project partners and as outlined in project scopes, including community and partner workshops and presentations 
  • Maintain a collaborative project environment with team members and project partners, subconsultants, and stakeholders
  • Assist with prospective project scoping, timelines, deliverables and team formation
  • Participate in the identification of new work and areas of business expansion 
  • Develop a professional network to support program business pipeline 
  • Actively participate in building organizational and team culture aligned with NDC values
  • Share the work of NDC and our partners in public forums including conferences, in the the media, and on social media in coordination with the organization's marketing team
  • Additional duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

Experience we’re seeking

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture preferred, with minimum 4 years experience in a professional design office setting
  • Master’s degree in architecture or urban design, or equivalent experience a plus
  • Licensure in architecture or on-track for licensure preferred
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Strong demonstrated personal commitment to community design and social justice

 

Job-related skills and attributes 

  • Strong understanding of architectural design excellence, planning and placemaking principles, and construction processes  
  • Strong graphic skills and proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and SketchUp graphic software
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit software
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS a plus 
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Excellent collaboration skills 
  • Experience with facilitation and community engagement desirable
  • Spanish language fluency desirable 
  • Ability to effectively meet deadlines 
  • Familiarity with project management software desirable
