Architect

This position is located in the Washington Headquarters Services (WHS), Facilities Services Directorate (FSD), Standards & Compliance Division (SCD), Office of Pentagon Fire Marshal (OPFM). SCD/OPFM is responsible for the oversight and management of safety, fire prevention/protection, occupational health, energy and environmental programs in all buildings and lands operated by FSD to include Federal property and space leased for FSD by the General Services Administration (GSA) and others.

Responsibilities

Serves as the Washington Headquarters Services Building Code (WHSBC) Engineering/Architectural/Accessibility Sub-Code Official. Serves as the lead engineer/architectural/accessibility expert performing detailed reviews of design drawings, shop drawings and submittals for buildings being constructed, altered or refurbished.

Incumbent typical work assignments may include the following:

  • Reviews studies, scopes of work, and preliminary and final design plans prepared both in-house and by commercial architecture/engineering (A-E) firms.
  • Develops/drafts original plans, design criteria, design drawings, and technical specifications and conducts the design review for engineering, architectural, and accessibility features of the project design work accomplished in-house.
  • Provides detailed design analysis reports in accordance with the WHSBC and Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) UFC 1-200-01, DoD Building Code; UFC 3-101-01, Architecture; Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Accessibility Standards; as well as other related UFCs, for designs prepared in-house and by commercial A-E firms.
  • Evaluates work for compliance with DoD accessibility and building codes and standards.

Basic Requirements for Series 0808
Architecture degree; or related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems. OR Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings.
