Archaeological Lab Tech A

Colonial Williamsburg’s Department of Archaeology is completing a two-year project to increase the long-term preservation and accessibility of the Carter’s Grove archaeological collection. This collection includes not only material associated with the seventeenth century Martin’s Hundred settlement, but also temporally and culturally diverse assemblages from nearly five decades of research and mitigation excavations within the Carter’s Grove property. To aid this effort the department is seeking to hire a full time, Laboratory Technician A position for a period of 1.5 years.

This position is full time (37.5 hours a week) for a period of 1.5 years. Work will be performed on site, in person at the Department of Archaeology and within collections spaces located in Williamsburg, Va.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Senior Curator of Archaeological Collections, the successful applicant will perform activities including digitizing and synthesizing original records and documentation, preparing and rehousing collections in an archivally appropriate manner, and cataloguing material culture in Colonial Williamsburg’s EMu database system. During this process, the candidate will also work collaboratively with conservation staff to identify and document material culture appropriate for further conservation treatment. Additionally, the position will assist in training and supervising volunteers in the performance of routine digitization and rehousing tasks associated with the project.

Qualifications

The successful application will possess at minimum a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, Preservation, History, or related field of study from an accredited college or university. The candidate will also have demonstrated experience with field and/or laboratory practices within the discipline of archaeology and a familiarity with the material culture of the Mid-Atlantic. Additionally, a successful candidate will possess strong organization skills, proficiency with computer skills (preferably with experience utilizing archaeological databases), the ability to effectively communicate both in writing and orally, the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team of staff and volunteers, as well as, the ability to work independently as appropriate. Candidates must have the ability to physically lift and move boxes of less than thirty pounds within and between collections spaces which include stairs and ladders.
