Smart Salting: Enhanced Winter Maintenance

The Smart Salting: Enhanced Winter Maintenance training program addresses salt pollution on parking lots, driveways, and sidewalks. Developed in partnership with the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council, the program aims to increase the adoption of effective ice melting strategies that protect the environment while also maintaining profitability and meeting customer expectations. The target audience for the program includes property managers, business owners, landscaping companies, and other private contractors/salt applicators. As part of this collaborative project, EFC and CCLC developed an online course that covers pre-season planning, site analysis, ice-fighting strategies, cost benefits, and more. EFC will oversee a cohort of trainees through the course, co-facilitate virtual peer-to-peer discussion forums, and co-organize in-person, hands-on sessions for trainees.
