Spring 2024 Colvin Capstone Competition Winner - Second Prize
Kaywood Heritage on Varnum Street is three new developments. Kaywood Plaza is a 100-unit residential building with 20,000 square feet of retail space and ample parking. Kaywood Park is a public space with a band shell. The Kaywood Performing Arts Center is a renovation of the Kaywood Theater with 20,000 square feet of theater and classroom space for performances and learning for adults and children. Kaywood Plaza features one and two-bedroom units, a conference room, outdoor recreation, and a fitness center. The retail is focused on meeting the needs of residents and the community with a 10,000 square foot Community Health Center and 7 retail shops and restaurants. Kaywood Park is ideal for farmers markets, family reunions, picnics, and outdoor concerts. Kaywood Performing Arts Center provides a venue for adult learning, performing arts classes for children, and place of worship for Casa De Oracion Para Las Naciones. The proximity of new affordable housing, a community health center, public park, and performing arts center will foster a greater sense of community in Mount Rainier. Public art will adorn the sides of the buildings to beautify and pay homage to the rich diversity of the neighborhood.
