MAPP’s Historic Preservation Program kicked-off its 30th Anniversary celebrations with a dinner at the Riversdale House Museum on October 27, 2018. It was the perfect place to celebrate. Over the years, many alumni have worked on this house and its grounds, both through the program and professionally. HISP alumnus and Riversdale Director, Edward Day welcomed guests including professors, alumni, students, faculty and friends who enjoyed the dinner and festivities despite the cold temperatures.

The evening included a program that included panelists reflecting on the history of the HISP program and offered insights on the future of preservation practice and education. Panelists included HISP program directors, past and present. Riversdale Docents provided tours and background on the house.

Assistant Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, Andrea Morris, and HISP Director Dennis Pogue together introduced the new Historic Preservation Anniversary Scholarship was inaugurated by founding donors Donald and Suzanne Linebaugh. Many others have joined the efforts to reach the HISP@30 goal: $30,000 by June 30, 2019. Assistant Dean Morris also introduced the Jon C. Graff Prize for Historic Preservation, a travel award that includes a travel award accompanied by a medallion and that will be given annually.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of HISP’s first Distinguished Alumna award to Patricia Gail Littlefield (MHP ’03), the very first degree recipient from the Historic Preservation Program. Gail capped the evening with a brief but encouraging and interesting story of community advocacy for the preservation of traditional street signs in the town of Washington Grove, Maryland. Gail even brought an example of each style along to show the audience.

Thanks to students Veronica Martin, Sara Baum and Grace Davenport, for pitching-in to help the event run smoothly.
