Architecture Library

The University of Maryland at College Park maintains eight libraries, including Architecture, Art, McKeldin, and Hornbake. With your student ID, you may check out circulating materials from any of these facilities. Instructors typically place course readings on reserve at the Architecture or McKeldin libraries.

The School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation has its own branch library, located on the second floor of the school. Although it is open limited hours to the public, all students, staff, and faculty of the school have 24/7 access for studying, scanning, checking out books, or browsing magazines.

The library contains books on the subject areas of the school, both bound and current periodicals, a reference section, as well as a Special Collections room. Materials may be requested from other universities nationwide as well. Two group study rooms, computer workstations and two flatbed scanners are available to all students. Librarians are available by appointment to assist with your research needs.

Mckeldin Library

McKeldin, with the largest collection of books and journals on campus, is the primary library for graduate research. The Learning Commons, located on the second floor, is a place to print papers and posters, and to borrow equipment like tablets or laptops. Interlibrary Loan materials can be picked up at the Library of your choice.

Art Library

The Art Library houses a collection of nearly 100,000 volumes in art history, archaeology, and studio arts, including photography and graphic design. The collection is designed to support upper-class, graduate level, and research programs in art and art history.

The Art Library is located in Room 2213 on the second floor of the Art/Sociology Building. Additional information, including Art Library floor plans, a campus map with driving directions, and information for people with disabilities are available.

Hornbake Library

Hornbake Library houses archives and manuscripts, the Katherine Anne Porter Room, the Library of American Broadcasting, National Public Broadcasting Archives, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library Collection.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation Library, located in Hornbake Library on the College Park campus, offers a wealth of preservation materials (more than 11,000 volumes).

URSP Library

The Urban Studies and Planning Library is a small collection of planning books and periodicals donated by Dr. Melvin Levin. It is located in the Caroline Hall conference room (CAR 0100), which is always open to URSP students. To check out books from the planning library, refer to the clipboard on the bookshelf.

Washington Area Libraries

If the College Park libraries do not have what you need, consult the interlibrary loan service on campus, or the nearby Library of Congress. In addition, some of the campus libraries in the area have reasonable collections and nice reading rooms, including those at American and George Washington universities. And do not forget the resources of local research centers such as the Brookings Institution and the World Bank. Finally, Maryland Historical Trust Library is an additional resource in the area.
