The ARCH 601 Timber in the City Topical Studio was led by Professor of the Practice Peter Noonan, AIA, LEED AP. Eleven students were organized into five student teams that designed projects for the ACSA Timber in the City: Urban Habitat International Student Design Competition. The competition program is centered on a mixed used, mid-rise, mass timber building in New York city that includes 100 affordable dwelling units, an early childhood education center, and a community wellness center. The site is along the East River, in Queens, New York, just south of the Queensborough Bridge. The major focus of the competition brief is on building community, increasing sustainability, and securing carbon sequestration through the use of mass timber construction technologies (CLC, DLT, NLT, & GluLam) with innovative design.
The student team of Eric Bos and Trevor Wood won first place in the 2019 ACSA Timber in the City Competition, along with a $10,000 prize in a competitive field of 238 entries and over 900 participants worldwide.
