Prospective Students

Welcome to the University of Maryland Real Estate Development Program!

Maryland’s Real Estate Development (RDEV) Program is a multidisciplinary and comprehensive program that prepares its students for successful careers in the real estate development industry. Located in the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, our students benefit from the shared spaces, projects, and opportunities that naturally occur across the different disciplines within the school and campus. We educate our students to develop for the Quadruple Bottom Line: projects that are financially feasible, environmentally respectful, sustainably designed, and socially responsible.

The RDEV Program is an evening program that provides hands-on experience with our professional faculty working in the industry. Our students come from a number of different backgrounds, with 75 percent working full time.

Among the program’s proven strengths is its flexible curriculum. The RDEV Program is tailored to each student’s interests and allows them to choose their own pace and path to complete their course of study. Students are required to take anywhere from 33 to 42 credits to obtain a Master of Real Estate Development degree. We also offer a Graduate Certificate in Real Estate Development that requires 12 to 21 credits. Some of the required courses include Fundamentals of Finance, Development law, Market Analysis & Valuation, Planning & Entitlements, Urban Design, Construction Management, and Asset Management. As a land grant institution, we often integrate real-world projects into the coursework, leveraging faculty and student expertise to help create more vibrant communities.

In addition to a comprehensive education, the RDEV Program provides many opportunities for our students to network with industry professionals through various conferences and events hosted by the program or by the Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development, which is also located at the University of Maryland. Our students have demonstrated excellence in various interdisciplinary competitions like the Urban Land Institute Hines Student Competition (2014 and 2015 winner), Housing Urban Development Innovation in Affordable Housing Competition (2018 and 2019 winner), and NAIOP Real Estate Challenge (2017 winner).
