Welcome to the University of Maryland Doctoral Program in Urban and Regional Planning (PhD Program)!

The University of Maryland's Doctoral Program (PhD) in Urban and Regional Planning and Design program takes full advantage of the resources of a leading research university and its location within the heart of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Our program boasts a small, tight-knit community for a tailored PhD experience and the flexibility to bridge a number of disciplines related to the built environment, including urban planning, design, historic preservation, and real-estate development. Our nationally-renowned faculty, the affiliated National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education, and proximity to the architecturally rich, historically significant, and diverse urban fabric of the Mid-Atlantic region makes the University of Maryland an exciting place to earn a doctoral degree in urban and regional planning.

The PhD program is highly selective and individualized. While some students have been admitted as part-time students, full-time study is encouraged and given priority in the admissions process.

Our official application review starts with the submission of a full application through the university system.  We recommend that before you apply to the program, you visit the faculty page to familiarize yourself with various faculty members and their expertise and research. We encourage you to reach out to potential dissertation advisors, based on shared research interests, and ask about make an inquiry of potential advising. Please do not send an inquiry about admission to individual faculty members; all admissions and funding decisions are made by a committee and not individual faculty members.

To be considered for the Urban and Regional Planning and Design Ph.D. Program, applicants must have a fully completed application submitted through the online platform by the deadline. We do not accept late applications.

We look forward to introducing you to the University of Maryland and its PhD Program in Urban and Regional Planning.
